'Justice must not take the form of revenge' : CJI Bobde

Chief justice of India Justice S.A Bobde opined that justice must never take the form of revenge, in a reference to four men accused of raping and killing woman veterinary doctor being shot dead by Telengana police. Justice system must be aware about the changing perception about itself,  PTI has reported the CJI as saying at an event in Jodhpur.

Justice can never be instant and "loses its character" as revenge, the Chief Justice added. He was speaking at the occasion of inauguration of the new building of the Rajasthan High Court in Jodhpur.

Recently four men accused of gang rape were shot dead by the Telengana police near hyderabad in an alleged encounter. The police version that the deceased men were taken to the spot where the body of the victim, a woman verteranary doctor was found. One of the accused men allegedly snatched a gun from one of the officers and began firing even as they escaped. But the police version had been questioned by rights advocates who accused the police of bypassing the due process and giving into public pressure.

Interestingly, the police action in Hyderabad had led to jubiliation among a section of crowd that gathered at the spot. The policemen were hailed as heroes. Commissioner Sajjanar found himself popular on social media after he defended his forces on the action.  But retired judges and bureaucrats came out to question the police version. 

India is mong countries where crimes against women often goes unreported. Nirbhaya incident of 2012 had led to public outrage and similar demands for immediate execution of the convicted persons .High pendency of cases and The comments made by the CJI take prominence as the demand for immediate death penalty has reemerged from a section of civil society.
